Chief Magistrate of Hong Kong (1846-1855) and at the time of his death had recently been appointed as the first British consul to Siam. Died from fever and in his last days was treated on board an American warship.

Following her husband's early death, Eliza and daughter Maudie returned to
England where Maudie's three elder brothers (aged 8, 7 and 5) were
boarding with an aunt. Eliza was pregnant and in February gave birth to
Guy Hillier.
