The road used to be two roads &#8211; the part below the canal aqueduct was known as Commercial Road and that above the aqueduct Greenshaw Lane; it is marked as such on the 1862 map but when and why this was changed I don&#8217;t know. It is possible that Greenshaw was simply a misunderstanding on the part of the map draughtsman. I also have an early 20thC plan of <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=3933\">Adelphi Mill<\/a> (below the canal) showing the lower part as Greenshaw Lane.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3357\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3357\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3357 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/adelphi5171.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adelphi mill from the gatehouse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/td>\n<td style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Between the <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=1372\">Middlewood Way<\/a> and the canal there are a number of commercial activities. <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2222\">Clough Bank<\/a> is a small industrial estate built on the <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=4134\">Macclesfield, Bollington &amp; Marple Railway<\/a> goods yard. The now demolished railway bridge over Grimshaw Lane was exactly where the entrance to Clough Bank is today. Opposite is the Middlewood Way and the location of Bollington passenger railway station. The railway was closed in 1971. Other industrial activities include Bailey Business Park opposite Adelphi Mill (left). On the uphill side of the canal is Bollington Wharf where various boating activities take place. This is also the base for Bollington Boats &amp; Bikes &#8211; canal day boats and bicycles for hire.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Bailey Business Park<\/strong> is the yard and industrial units opposite Adelphi Mill. <strong>Pearson&#8217;s Yard<\/strong> is a further industrial area behind Bailey Business Park with access via the drive to the right of the business park.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Further up Grimshaw Lane is <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=781\">St John&#8217;s School<\/a> and its playing field. This school was built in 1963\/4 when the old one in <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2216\">Church Street<\/a> was cleared for the <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2415\">Vine Street<\/a> re-development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hollin Old Hall is close to the top of the road. The junction with Hurst Lane was once known as Gatley Green, possibly in recognition of the Gatley family who lived nearby and quarried stone in Kerridge Hill. <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=5066\">Alfred Gatley<\/a> was a notable sculptor in the 19th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<table class=\"picleft\" cellspacing=\"10\" cellpadding=\"10\" align=\"left\" bgcolor=\"#FFFF99\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"picleft\" style=\"width: 60%;\" bgcolor=\"#FFFF99\"><em>A series of names along the route suggests that perhaps Scandinavian soldiers and settlers came this way. Grimshaw Lane may be derived from the Old Norse &#8216;haugr&#8217;, which can mean hill, with &#8216;Grimr&#8217;, a Scandinavian personal name &#8211; as Kenneth Cameron suggested for Grimshoe in Norfolk.<\/em><\/td>\n<td>\n<table cellspacing=\"10\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Extract from a history of Kerridge Hill and Ingersley Vale by George Longden for the KRIV project.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p>In view of the fact that the street had different names in the 19thC it is possible that Grimshaw was named after a member of the notable local family of that name living until the early 20thC at Errwood Hall in the Goyt valley.<\/p>\n<p>The junction with Chancery Lane and Jackson Lane is known as Stakehouse End. This name probably refers to there having been a stake or timber cattle enclosure there in earlier times.
