There are several instances of the cottages being built sideways on to the street, accessed by ginnels. In one case the ginnel leads to a yard with a further row of cottages standing parallel to the street. This area was called <strong>Daisybank<\/strong> and included several cottages which were built on &#8216;The Little Lower Meadow&#8217;. Queensbench Building was only called this after 1861.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Many properties have fine views over the village and the surrounding countryside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As a consequence of this tightly packed housing, parking is a major problem on the street. The cottages on Daisybank have no vehicular access.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Approach off&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2216\">Church Street<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2206\">Chancery Lane<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Leads to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=905\">Allen Street<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2236\">Cumberland Drive<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2240\">Deanway<\/a> (Bollin Heights, Mill Bank Court),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2206\">Chancery Lane<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2232\">Cow Lane<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Nearest shops &#8211;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2365\">Palmerston Street<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Nearest pubs &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=222\">The Turners<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=202\">Cotton Tree<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2312\">Ingersley Road<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=218\">Spinner&#8217;s Arms<\/a> in&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;\" href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2365\">Palmerston Street<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: inherit;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Council Ward &#8211; West side,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bollington-tc.gov.uk\/council\/councillors#central\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Central<\/a>; east side,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bollington-tc.gov.uk\/council\/councillors#east\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">East<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The steepest top section of the street was referred to as Adshead Barn Brow in the 1851 census. Numbers 2-54, 5-41 and 21A are subject to Article 4 Direction.<\/p>\n<h3>History<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Queensbench Building<\/strong> was built by George Redfern from Derby who bought the land from Mary Broster, it was witnessed by Samuel Higginbotham solicitor. Wagstaff Lane is mentioned but it is not sure yet where that was. One <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=6075&amp;pers=1201\">Laurence Wagstaff<\/a> was involved in Rainow mill in <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2314\">Ingersley Vale<\/a> in the early 19thC, so this lane could have been named after him. Queensbench Building is where the 19thC Assize Court Judge would have been put up for the night when he was attending court locally. There is a name stone on the side of the building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adshead\u2019s Barn Farm house<\/strong> If the house was built before 1644 (see below) then there would have been very few other buildings in the valley and the view would have been quite outstanding with perhaps just a couple of other buildings to be seen.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 36.1971%; vertical-align: top;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_2452\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2452\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2452 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/adshead7900.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adshead\u2019s Barn Farm house and cottage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 63.1156%; vertical-align: top;\">\n<p>The top piece of Lord Street in front of the farm was referred to as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2202\">Adshead Barn Brow<\/a>&nbsp;in the 1851 census.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The cottage to the right of the house was, in the mid 19thC, occupied by the Chatterton family. James Shepley Chatterton was known as the Milestone King because he wrote a poem for publication every birthday.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=5060\">See the page devoted to the family<\/a>. The cottage is now integrated with the house.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>Jane Laughton, the local historian, has pointed out that in 1611 [the] Adshead [family] were operating <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=3970\">Rainow Mill<\/a>, then a corn mill, which had been leased to the family since 1549.
