A gateway between the buildings on the left leads to Courier Row (see below), a couple of delightful cottages with lovely gardens and a pond.<\/p>\n<p>Wellington Road is crossed by the stone arches of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=4134\"><em>Macclesfield, Bollington &amp; Marple Railway<\/em><\/a>, now converted into the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=1372\">Middlewood Way<\/a>. Along its length you will find the Town Hall (below), the now closed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=4084\">Methodist church<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=4082\">St Gregory&#8217;s church<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2423\">Waterhouse estate<\/a>&nbsp;where&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=3976\">Waterhouse mill<\/a>&nbsp;once stood, the Waterhouse itself and the <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=777\">Bollington Medical Centre<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2200\">Brook House<\/a> &#8211; an important Bollington house recently restored, <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=7893\">Bollington Hall farmhouse<\/a> &#8211; one of the oldest buildings in the area (see below).&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terry_Waite\">Terry Waite&nbsp;<span class=\"smaller\">CBE<\/span><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-163\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/external.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"10\" height=\"10\">&nbsp;was born at 60 Wellington Road (opposite the Waterhouse).<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 300px; vertical-align: top;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3823\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/wellington10254.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: top; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=779#TownHall\">Bollington&nbsp;Town Hall<\/a>&nbsp;flying the town flag &#8211; White Nancy on a green background &#8211; on Wellington Road. <br \/>\n<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3820\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/wellington0359.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\">&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: top;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=7893\">Bollington Hall farmhouse<\/a><a name=\"farmhouse\"><\/a>&nbsp;is one of the oldest buildings in the district; Historic England says 16thC origins, the plaque says c.1365.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Right behind it used to stand Bollington corn mill, probably also dating from the 14thC, whose wheel was fed by a leat that brought water all the way from near Bridgend in Palmerston Street. The mill was ruined and demolished very many years ago and <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2381\">Riverbank Close<\/a> was built across the site in more recent times. The course of the leat can be seen in the <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=933\">Recreation Ground<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: top;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3819\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/wellington0357.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: top; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">A fine terrace of stone cottages, 97-107, near the junction with Albert Road.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>On the 1862 map Wellington Road is marked as Wellington Lane, and that&#8217;s what it was then, green fields and very few properties. <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=7895\">Brook House<\/a> has an interesting history including <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=8529\">Rhoda Dawson&#8217;s dance classes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Courier Row<\/h3>\n<p>This is a private road, very short, with just a couple of properties. Older Bollington residents may be heard referring to it as &#8216;down fout&#8217;. The meaning of this phrase has been lost with time although down probably means what it does today &#8211; as in &#8216;going down the village&#8217;. But what a fout is we don&#8217;t know. It is likely to be a dialect word and maybe a corruption of same. If you have any clues as to its origin and meaning&nbsp;<a title=\"Email the history editor\" href=\"mailto:history@happy-valley.org.uk\">please let me know!<\/a>&nbsp;There is a reference to the Fout in <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/30.0.pdf\">Bollington Live, edition 30 page 11<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5850\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/external.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"10\" height=\"10\">, but alas no explanation of the name.<\/p>\n<h3>Knowle&#8217;s Green<\/h3>\n<p>A small part of Wellington Road was once known as Knowle&#8217;s Green but the name has dropped out of use over the years. However, the name has been adopted by a cheese shop some way from the place described here. The area originally covered at least the location of the <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=4084\">Methodist church<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=7897\">Manse<\/a>, the Arts Centre and the railway viaduct (<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=1372\">Middlewood Way<\/a>).
