There is a strong association of householders, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=3111\">Kerridge Residents Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the history of Kerridge is on other pages &#8211;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=5608\">extractive industries<\/a>;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=4020\">Kerridge Wharf and Stone Saw Mill<\/a>; the <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=4018\">&#8216;Rally road&#8217;<\/a>. Also a page on the <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=4132\">&#8216;Bollington Burst&#8217;<\/a>, the 1912 canal breach which actually happened in Kerridge! Their gardens are a picture, built amongst stone walls and steps. There are many footpaths in this area. The one shown right leads down the field to the right of the farm below.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3870\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3870\" style=\"width: 353px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3870 size-full\" title=\"Remembrance is celebrated on the first Sunday in July\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/ker_war_mem_1516.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"353\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/ker_war_mem_1516.jpg 353w, https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/ker_war_mem_1516-300x232.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 353px) 100vw, 353px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3870\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kerridge War Memorial<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=18572\">The War Memorial<\/a> is maintained by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=638#kerridgewarmemorialcommittee\">Kerridge War Memorial Committee<\/a>&nbsp;using only public subscriptions. It is always immaculate and colourful. A steam engine at the top was used to lower wagon loads of stone from the quarries down to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=4018\">Rally Road<\/a>&nbsp;below.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Kerridge stands above Bollington on the western side of Kerridge Hill which is the local landmark.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=861\">White Nancy<\/a>&nbsp;stands on the north end of the hill immediately above Kerridge. The small town of&nbsp;Bollington&nbsp;is located about three miles north of&nbsp;Macclesfield, 18 miles south east of Manchester, in north east Cheshire, in the north west of England. There was once a coal mine in the hill too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Clayton&#8217;s Tower, beside&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2429\">Windmill Lane<\/a>, appears to have been a chimney top for a furnace lower down the hill, or perhaps a ventilator for the coal mine under the hill. An inspection in 2009 showed no sign of soot and, having a solid rock floor, no connection to any mine or furnace &#8211; it&#8217;s just a folly! The tower was cleaned and minor problems repaired in April 2010 (pictured) as a part of the KRIV project. The work was carried out by Bollington&#8217;s Bailey Steeplejacks who provide this kind of service around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The opening of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.macclesfieldcanal.org.uk\/\" target=\"maccc\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Macclesfield&nbsp;Canal<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-163\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/external.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"10\" height=\"10\"> in 1831 provided important development incentive for the whole area, with stone being taken down the tramway to the canal dock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Probably the best known son of Kerridge is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=5066\">Alfred Gatley (1816-1863)<\/a>, who was a noted sculptor and who spent much of his professional life in Rome.
