It was located where <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=7895\">Brook House<\/a> is today, on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2425\">Wellington Road<\/a>. The mill was water powered. The process also uses a lot of water, and tanneries were notorious for polluting their local watercourse, as well as being most unpleasantly odorous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Peter Lomas went on to build the first&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=3976\">Waterhouse mill<\/a>&nbsp;on the site behind the tannery. Just a part of a wall remains. We know that in 1832 it comprised a warehouse, dye house, weaving shop, engine house, and steam engine. This was detailed in an <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/people-antrobus_act.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Act of Parliament<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14472\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/external.png\" title=\"Going to an external website!\" width=\"10\" height=\"10\">&nbsp;used to modify Philip Antrobus\u2019s Will. There are some examples in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2419\">Water Street<\/a>, as well as the cottages at the bottom of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=921\">Beeston Brow<\/a>. Silk weaving was carried on at cottages in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2220\">Clarke Lane<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>Fulling&nbsp;<a name=\"fulling\"><\/a>mill \/ Waulk mill<\/h3>\n<p>Fulling and waulking are processes applied to the preparation and cleaning of wool prior to spinning it into thread. This mill almost certainly pre-dates the cotton industry in Bollington. While there is evidence that there was a fulling mill in the valley of the river Dean, there is none to show where it was! The most likely location is somewhere up&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2314\">Ingersley Vale<\/a>, near to the houses there which carry the name of Waulk mill.
