Cheshire West &amp; Chester (CWCC) and Cheshire East (CEC) were established. These two councils are entirely autonomous. This is a piece of land stretching from the north east to the south west of the whole county of Cheshire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Cheshire East Council is the third-largest unitary authority in the North West by area, after Liverpool and Manchester. In 2009 Cheshire East had a population of 360,700, and the council employed c.14,000 staff. The budget in 2009\/10 was \u00a3234.1 million. Since then the population has increased and the staffing and budget have been significantly reduced. The headquarters is at Delamere House, Delamere Street, Crewe, CW1 2LL. Town Councils (like Bollington&#8217;s) in the major towns each have a mayor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The political representation on the council in 2009 comprised 81 councillors, with no party having an overall majority. The leadership was organised into a Cabinet of nine, each specialising in a particular subject portfolio. The portfolios were:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Strategic Communities, Environment, Children &amp; Family Services, Health &amp; Adult Social Care, Corporate Policy, Communities &amp; Regulatory Services, Housing Planning Economic Development &amp; Regeneration, Performance, Finance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This structure was changed in April 2021, to revert to a committee system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">A mayor of East Cheshire is appointed by the council each year in May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cheshireeast.gov.uk\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cheshire East website<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14472\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/external.png\" title=\"Going to an external website!\" width=\"10\" height=\"10\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3>Whither Cheshire county?<\/h3>\n<p>As a geographic county Cheshire continues to exist as it has done for centuries. It just no longer has a single council governing all of it. However, in 2024 plans were explored to return to a larger unitary council including the existing Cheshire East and Cheshire West &amp; Chester.<\/p>\n<h2>Bollington<a name=\"Bollington\"><\/a> Town Council<\/h2>\n<p>Bollington Town Council continues as the lowest level of local government, having Parish Council status.
