Bollington Pharmacists<\/h2>\nThe following information has been researched by David & Mary Bowen who owned Walter Lord Ltd., the pharmacy in Palmerston Street, later moved to Wellington Road. They owned the business from 1979 to 2003.<\/p>\n

MPS HAMMOND<\/strong>, Albert MPS ELWOOD<\/strong>, Thomas Herbert MPS BRIAN<\/strong>, Ernest MPS BRIAN<\/strong>, Ernest Potts MPS son of Ernest Brian. MURPHY<\/strong>, Duncan MPS (1905-1965) 1869 John Bracegirdle 1876 Philip Hall Hockenhull MPS 1902 Albert Hammond MPS There is no record of a pharmacy here between 1910 and1921 <\/p>\n 1921 Thomas Herbert Elwood MPS<\/p>\n 1928 Ernest Brian MPS 1932 Ernest Brian & Son employed Duncan Murphy MPS Many people recall his lovely Scottish accent and his helpfulness. He lived above the shop until 1950, when the pharmacy merged with Pool Bank Pharmacy, where he continued to work until 1963.<\/p>\n WALKLEY, James Born 1813. Market Place, 21 High Street. WALKLEY James Byron. Born 1857. He attended the Modern School in Macclesfield and in 1872 he won the chemistry prize. 1906, 1910 and 1914 Kelly\u2019s list a Drug Store run by Martha Walkley. The shop, at 21 High Street, was closed until 1975, the contents largely untouched. Cheshire Museums could give me very little information about the fate of the items they received and the bottles and jars were bought by Mr. Chris Aspin on behalf of Helmshore Museum, Rossendale. The Museum was taken over by Lancashire CC. Sadly plans to make a pharmacy there did not materialise and there was a fire in the store where the bottles were stored. I have not been in touch with Lancashire Museums.<\/p>\n There were photographs and pictures in the Macclesfield Express on the 4th and 11th of September 1975 when the shop was bought by Mr and Mrs Mellor and turned into a grocery store.<\/p>\n GREGORY, Lawrence Harry MPS Registered as a pharmacist in 1940. BENSON, David MPS carried on the pharmacy at Grimshaw Lane from 1954 to 1987. At the time the NHS was encouraging small pharmacies to close.<\/p>\n ANDREW, John Herbert MPS Registered as a pharmacist in 1895 in Oldham. ANDREW, Samuel Dronsfield MPS Registered in 1932. WILD, Doris MPS of New Mills was the registered pharmacist at 74 Palmerston Street in 1949, only the pharmacy transferring to Ernest Brian in 1950.<\/p>\n WALTER LORD LTD. was a Limited Company which bought Pool Bank Pharmacy at 74 Palmerston Street in 1963. The pharmacy traded under this name until it was sold to Rowlands Chemists in 2003. During this time the ownership of the Company changed three times.<\/p>\n WOLFENDEN, Arthur Charlesworth MPS ran the pharmacy from 1963 to 1968. PARTINGTON, Betty MPS She remarried in 1976 becoming Betty DILWORTH.<\/p>\n BOWEN, Mary Lyn MPS and her husband David bought the Company in 1979.<\/p>\n When David Benson closed, and Pool Bank Pharmacy became the only one in the village, Walter Lord was badly placed for many of the patients served by the Waterhouse surgery. Eventually more central premises were found and converted and in January 1993 the pharmacy moved to 71 Wellington Road.<\/p>\n Several pharmacists worked regularly at the pharmacy on a part-time basis. These included Christine Higgins, Josephine Loftus, Susan Briggs and Rosemary Priaulx.<\/p>\n 1897 John Herbert Andrew MPS (\u2018Corky\u2019 Andrew). He was also the village dentist. He used his wooden leg to restrain patients in an armchair. Many have mentioned listening to the screams. His son Samuel Dronsfield Andrew MPS qualified in 1932.<\/p>\n 1938 Premises registered as J.H. Andrew & Son<\/p>\n 1949 Doris Wild MPS<\/p>\n 1950 Ernest Potts Brian MPS (moved down from 38 Palmerston Street) with Duncan Murphy MPS<\/p>\n 1964 The business was bought by Walter Lord Ltd and this company traded for the next 39 years owned by a number of pharmacists.<\/p>\n 1964-1967 Arthur Charlesworth Wolfenden MPS<\/p>\n 1967-1979 Betty Dilworth MPS (Partington until1976) <\/p>\n 1979-1993 Mary Bowen MPS<\/p>\n Walter Lord Ltd transferred to 71 Wellington Road.<\/p>\n

\nRegistered in 1916 and worked in Brigg, Lincolnshire in 1919+1920
\n1921 Registered at 38 Palmerston St.<\/p>\n
\n1928 he became superintendent pharmacist at 38 Palmerston Street, though his main business was at 25 Mill Street, Macclesfield. (This was later sold to Timothy Whites).<\/p>\n
\n1932 registered with home address Tal y Cafn, London Road, Prestbury.
\nHe later moved to 38? South West Avenue.
\nHe worked both in Macclesfield and Bollington and after selling the pharmacy he worked in Macclesfield Hospital until 1974.
\nIn 1950 the company Ernest Brian and Son sold 38 Palmerston Street to Charles Green (butcher) and moved to 74 Palmerston Street. <\/p>\n
\nFrom 1932 until 1963 he was employed by Ernest Brian & Son. He lived at 38 Palmerston Street until it was sold when he moved to South West Avenue.<\/p>\nPharmacy shops<\/h2>\n

\nHe was a Chemist and Druggist in High Street before 1848. He moved to Palmerston Street between 1860 and 1869.<\/p>\n
\nHe lived above the shop and was listed as a Chemist and Druggist and Photographic Artist.<\/p>\n
\nHe lived at Newbridge House, Shrigley Road until 1909, then moved to Poynton.<\/p>\n
\nHe also had a pharmacy at 25 Mill Street, Macclesfield.

Walkley\u2019s, Market Place<\/h3>\n
\n1857 Kelly\u2019s Directory refers to him as a Surgeon and Chemist.
\n1871 census shows James Walkley \u2013 chemist, his wife Elizabeth and son James Byron Walkley \u2013 scholar.<\/p>\n
\n1892, 1896 and 1902 Kelly\u2019s Directory list him as a Chemist and Druggist (not Pharmaceutical) and he was not registered as a pharmacist.<\/p>\n
\nLater the shop was run by a third Walkley sister, Mrs Kendrick and her husband.<\/p>\n
\n1949 opened a chemist and photographic studio at 2 Grimshaw Lane and lived next door.<\/p>\n
\n1897 registered address is 74 Palmerston Street.
\nHe had a wooden leg which he used to anchor people in a wooden arm chair while he extracted their teeth! He was generally known as \u2018Corky\u2019 Andrews.
\nLast registered as a pharmacist in 1946.<\/p>\n
\nHe lived at High Bank, Hurst Lane, and joined his father in the business which became J.H. Andrew and Son and dispensed until 1948.<\/p>\nWalter Lord<\/h3>\n
