The picture shows Bollington Cross School with the church beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The distinguished physicist <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=5058\">Sir James Chadwick (1891-1974)<\/a> was educated at the school.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2936\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2936\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=620#StOswalds\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2936 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/bollington28-06.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2936\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St. Oswald&#8217;s church in 1908<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=620#StOswalds\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">St Oswald&#8217;s Church<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">, built in 1908, and, since St John&#8217;s closed in 2003, the Bollington Parish Church.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2937\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2937\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2937 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/bollington0350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2937\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Orchard House<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">On the corner of Moss Brow is one of the most beautiful old houses in Bollington, <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=7879\">Orchard House<\/a>. Other notable houses along the street include <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=7883\">Barley Grange<\/a>, Heath House and the <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=4052\">Rookery<\/a> (see below).<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2941\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2941\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2941 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/bollingtonx1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2941\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Millennium Cross<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">To mark the Millennium, a new cross was installed on the green at the junction of Kingsway and Bollington Road. This was created by Doreen Earl who took the stone from her Sycamore Quarry at Kerridge and cut it to shape on a computer controlled stone saw. The impression of the cross and the date, 2000, were cut by sand blasting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The name Bollington Cross recognises the fact that there has previously been a cross in the village. Unfortunately, the location of this original cross is not known.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2938\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2938\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=4052\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2938 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/bollington10218.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2938\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Rookery<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=4052\">The Rookery<\/a> <a id=\"rookery\" name=\"rookery\"><\/a>is another fine house on Bollington Road, the last on the right going towards Macclesfield. It was refurbished and divided into six units in 2004-06.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The house was built and occupied by <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=5035\">Philip Antrobus<\/a>&nbsp;whose family also built several of the original mills in Bollington including <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=1366\">Lowerhouse<\/a> in 1818\/19. In 1832 we believe The Rookery to have been occupied by William Crosley, the engineer and builder of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macclesfieldcanal.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Macclesfield Canal<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-163\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/external.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"10\" height=\"10\"><\/a>, then being completed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">At that time, 1830s, the house was smaller, extending (see lower picture) from the right side as far as the gutter down pipe to the left of centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2935\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2935\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2935 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/bollington_rookery_dscf13544.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"130\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2935\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Rookery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">By 1851 Peter Brooke, Cotton Merchant, age 76, had retired to the house, seemingly a widower having two servants to attend him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Another notable house on Bollington Road rebuilt by Philip Antrobus is Turner Heath House (opposite <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2371\">Princess Drive<\/a> today). Antrobus also had <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=4034#turnerheath\">a small mill<\/a> beside the house. Other well known occupiers of Turner Heath House include the <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=5068\">Samuel Greg<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=5062\">Coope<\/a> families.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h3>Chapel<a name=\"chapel\"><\/a> Street, Bollington Cross<sup>1<\/sup><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The houses that stand at right angles to Bollington Road and today have the addresses 53 &#8211; 59 Bollington Road were once known as Chapel Street (not to be confused with the existent <a href=\"https:\/\/happyvalley.org.uk\/?page_id=2208\">Chapel Street<\/a> at the other end of town!). These four cottages were actually built as a Primitive Methodist chapel in 1833. The chapel was used for worship and for Sunday School for the local children. The congregation amounted to between 200 and 300 each Sunday!
