Family notes for William Ian HUGHES and Lilian STUBBS

The webmaster particularly remembers Lilian and Ian for they were our first neighbours when my wife and I moved to Bollington in 1975, and wonderful neighbours they were. Our properties adjoined and we were frequently in each others gardens. [102]

Notes for William Ian HUGHES

Ian was a noted cricketer, a successful batsman playing for Bollington for many years, which lead to his meeting Lilian Stubbs who he later married.

As a waterboard Inspector, Ian knew Bollington and it's people intimately. He was the first to respond whenever someone had lost their water supply. One day it was his own wife Lilian who had cause to enquire as to why she had no water. Thorough investigation determined that the problem lay in the supply pipe from Hurst Lane to the house and the place to look first was the stop cock buried under the street. A digging squad were called in and the potentially offending stop cock was removed. Sure enough it was obstructed - by just half a frog! The first question was how on earth did a frog get into the water mains? The second question was where was the other half frog!? Neither of these questions was ever answered!

Notes for Lilian STUBBS

Lilian was brought up in a cottage behind the Methodist church in Park Green, Macclesfield, where her parents were caretakers to the church. She had a sister seven years older than her. Lilian was good at school, passing her 11+ and GCEs. She started work at about age 17 in the Cheshire Building Society office in Macclesfield. When she returned to work after having her three children she was employed at the HM Inland Revenue office in the town, retiring at age 60 in 1995.

She had a great love of singing and joined several choirs including the Oriana, the Thomas Cranmer, the Bollington St John's, and others over the years, often singing in three different choirs in a single week. Her funeral was marked by beautiful singing from members of the Oriana and Thomas Cranmer choirs.

Lilian had a love for sport - watching not playing! It was through watching cricket that she met her husband, Ian Hughes, and they married in 1960, and lived their whole married life at Nor'Breck, Hurst Lane, Bollington.
