The “Big” or “Large” Sunday School was located at School Brow, Hurst Lane, where the Civic Hall is now located.

Erected in 1861 by the Methodists at a cost of £2,000, it was also used as a cookery centre and technical school, and for public meetings and entertainments. It would seat about 900 people. It also provided supplementary class rooms for Water Street high school.
The building was demolished in the early 1970s and replaced by the new Library and Civic Hall. The old building was expensive to maintain, not really suitable for modern requirements and technology, very cold and costly to heat.
