Notes for Agnes Amy BULLEY

Always known as Amy, she was a promoter of women's education. She was an early student at both Girton College and Newnham College and one of the first two students to sit the tripos examinations in Cambridge. She entered education where she helped to create a 'women′s department' at what would become Manchester University. She wrote about women′s rights and the growth of 'white blouse' employment. [159]

The picture records Agnes Amy BULLEY for Newnham college, Cambridge (1873/74). It was painted by Mary Florence Monkhouse thought to be in about 1920. [159]

Her sister-in-law, Emma Frances BROOKE, was also in the first intake at Newnham and a noted social reformer. [102]

A sister of Joseph's first wife, Mary Raffles BULLEY. Marrying a previous wife's sister was illegal until 1907, so it looks as though this might have been a marriage immediately after that change. [102]

Agnes Amy BULLEY lived under the same roof with Joseph BROOKE and his first wife, her sister, Mary Raffles BULLEY, for almost 30 years. As Agnes and Joseph married quite soon after Mary died, one may assume that the three of them were very close for a long time. [102]
