Crossfield Road, Bollington Cross, runs between South West Avenue and Ovenhouse Lane. At the South West Avenue end it is mostly semi-detached brick houses. At the Ovenhouse Lane end bungalows designed for the elderly predominate, owned by Peaks & Plains Housing Trust. Approach off South West Avenue or Ovenhouse Lane. Pedestrian access from Archer Close and South West Avenue. Leads to Barnfield Road, Kent Avenue. Nearest shops – Ovenhouse Lane. Nearest pub – Cock & Pheasant. Council Ward – East. Crossfield Road is widened out to form a green in front of the bungalows. Part of Crossfield Road and all of adjacent Kent Avenue – all the Peaks & Plains social housing properties – are presently the subject of a much contested planning application. The owners wish to demolish all these properties and build an entirely new estate of modern housing units. Their reason for this rather drastic action is because several properties are displaying structural problems emanating from the poor standard of their original construction. Peaks & Plains maintain that the problems are very likely to show up in other properties and that attempting to repair the problems and raise the standard of the homes to meet modern day building standards is uneconomic; it’s cheaper to start from a clean site. All occupants will be re-housed elsewhere in the Macclesfield area and retain the option of moving back once suitable properties have been completed. The present occupants, mainly elderly Bollington folk, are not happy about being forced to move to a new area, where they may not know any of their new neighbours, and the breakup of a well established community of folk who know and watch over each other, and regularly meet socially at the local shop and Community Centre. The community have suggested that only those faulty properties should be renewed. However, Peaks & Plains say that most of the properties will need rebuilding over the next few years and to do them one at a time would be uneconomic. They also wish to redesign the entire site in order to improve the layout and make better use of the land. |
