1896–1906: Chairman, Bollington Urban District Council
1906-1910: Liberal Member of Parliament for the Knutsford constituency (which included Bollington)

When he first established his business in Clough mill, A J King lived in Clough House adjacent to the mill build as the mill manager's house. This was later demolished to make room for expansion of the mill.
