Silver Street

A little street full of stone cottages. Those on the right share a common yard accessed through ginnels – a northern word meaning passageway.

Approach off Ingersley Road.

Leads to Chapel StreetHarrop Road.

Nearest shops – Palmerston Street.

Nearest pubs – Cotton Tree on the corner, The TurnersChurch House almost opposite the top end.

Council Ward – East.

Why Silver Street? I’m not sure. Chapel Street at the top end was previously called Gold Street so perhaps that is a clue. Doorstep milk deliveries (left) used to be the norm for every household but by the beginning of the 21stC they were becoming a rarity with very few milkmen serving few properties. Most households get their milk with the supermarket shopping, although in the late 20 teens there is reported to be a resurgance of trade for the milkman.

Conservation

This street is in the Bollington Conservation Area.
